Politico: Dingell pushes to keep chairmanship

While John Dingell’s campaign to keep the chairmanship of the Energy and Commerce Committee has kicked into high gear, his challenger, Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.), has operated largely out of the public eye.

Dingell has 50 years in the House and is the ultimate Old Bull, yet he launched a very public campaign to give the appearance that he has the chairmanship of the powerful committee locked up.

Dingell’s whip team held a conference call this afternoon to tell reporters that if there is a vote next week on the chairmanship, Dingell “will prevail by a comfortable margin,” in the words of Rep. Mike Doyle (D-Pa.).

Waxman has not announced a whip team, has said little publicly about his bid and is working behind the scenes to build a coalition. Waxman spokeswoman Karen Lightfoot would say only, “Congressman Waxman is running to win and expects to win.”
