Orlando Sentinel: Keller-Grayson contest draws national attention

Voters can expect a no-holds-barred brawl between Republican U.S. Rep. Ric Keller and his Democratic challenger during the next 10 weeks, with national-party officials labeling Central Florida a key battleground.

Barely 12 hours after Alan Grayson beat four other Democrats to win his party’s nomination, he was meeting with party officials from Washington about strategies for the general election against Keller.

“We see Florida’s 8th District as a pickup opportunity,” said Kyra Jennings, a spokeswoman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “These [primary election] results only validate what we had already thought about Ric Keller’s vulnerability.”

The Republican Party is also tracking the race.

“This is definitely one we’re keeping an eye on,” said Julie Shutley, a spokeswoman for the National Republican Congressional Committee. “Ric Keller is a good fit for his district, and we want to see him stay in Congress.”
