Legal Times: More Musical Chairs at DOJ

The turnover at the top of the Justice Department’s Office of Legislative Affairs continues.

Last week, Brian Benczkowski, who headed the office as a principal deputy assistant attorney general, stepped down to take the position of chief of staff to Deputy Attorney General Mark Filip.

Benczkowski’s start date was May 27. Benczkowski worked closely with Filip and other high-ranking Justice officials during their confirmations in recent months.

He previously served as chief of staff for the department’s Office of Legal Policy and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Benczkowski, who replaced Richard Hertling last year, also is a former senior counsel on the House Judiciary Committee under Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner Jr. (R-Wis.) and worked as an aide to Sen. Pete Domenici (R-N.M.).

Benczkowski’s replacement is Keith Nelson, who until recently directed legislative affairs at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.
